What if money was no object?

What job would you like to to get when you graduate?

I get asked this question a lot. And my answer is always, "I don't know yet". Sometimes I feel ashamed by not knowing what I want to do with my life. I have friends that have known exactly what they want to do with their lives since they were in school. A close friend of mine had her heart set on becoming a Speech and Language therapist, so she's gone to uni to study Speech and Language therapy and is guaranteed a job with the NHS when she graduates later on this year. I'm pleased for her, but also a little jealous. She has her plan, and she loves it.

I study Maths at university because I'm good at it, I even enjoy most parts of it, but what I'm going to do with my Maths degree I don't know. I've had many ideas, but none have really made me excited, or created a passion in me to strive for anything.

Part of me feels like I should be grateful for any job I can get (graduate jobs are hard to find you know), but should I settle?

I found a video the other day, and it made me think. What would I like to do with my life, if money was no object...

Do you know what you want to do with you life when you graduate/leave school? Or if you already have a job, is it your dream job? What would you do if money was no object?

  1. Really glad you linked that video, I personally have absolutely no direction for my future but feel a lot of pressure to follow a typical academic path so I love finding inspirational little things like that to try and help me out in doing what I want to do!

    1. I thought the video was really interesting, and Im pleased that someone else likes it too. I don't think there should be any pressure to decide.

My friend read a quote out to me the other day which said, 'I don't want to be 40 and realise that I've wasted the last 20 years doing something I don't enjoy, all because I was forced to make a decision in my teens'

  2. I HAVE NO IDEA! A few of us were talking about this on Twitter this evening... I think it's so rare to know what you want to do, and if you do, in a lot of cases you need stupid amounts of impossible to get experience to even get started. Ugh. I like my job... sort of. But I don't want to do it forever. Deciding what to do with your life is SO hard- I definitely feel your pain! xx

    1. That's the problem, everywhere expects you to have experience, which you can't get because no one will hire you because you have no experience, which you can't get because... (see where I'm going with this)

  3. I thought I had my life all planned out, I went to uni to study Primary teaching at 18...dropped out before the end of my first year, not because of the work, but because every time I stood in front of a class I went to pieces :( in hindsight I was pushed by my college into uni straight out of college, when I wanted to get experience first before jumping straight in...
Don't worry that you're unsure where your life is going, things will fall into place in the end :D even if not in the way you think.
I'm still in the same line of work but not teaching, and couldn't be happier :D

    1. It's nice to hear someone's opinion who has experience. I guess I'll just see what happens. Right now I just want to enjoy being young and make the most of it
